The Utilities Telecom Council (UTC) Fiber Optic Professional (FOP) certification addresses aerial and underground fiber-optic networks for distribution and transmission, as well as rights-of-ways issues.
To achieve the UTC FOP designation, you must demonstrate knowledge of fiber optics by achieving a score of 80 percent or higher on the exam. The names of those who pass the exam will be entered into the UTC FOP database, maintained by the UTC, for confirmation by prospective employers and others.
The certification and examination fee is $175 for UTC members and $275 for non members. The certifications are valid for three years.
Certification is optional and not a course requirement. You need to request and pay for the test when you register for a class. Testing is performed during the last two hours of class.
The UTC FOP Level 1 Technician certification is designed for utility installers, technicians, and supervisors. It is available after successfully completing the three-day Fiber Optics for Utilities Level 1 course and passing the Level 1 certification exam.
The UTC FOP Level 2 Designer certification is designed for utility engineers, designers, supervisors, and management. It is available after successfully completing the one-day Fiber Optics for Utilities Level 2 course and passing the Level 2 certification exam.
The UTC FOP Level 3 Advanced Designer certification is designed for utility engineers, designers, supervisors, and management. This certification is only available as part of a customized Fiber Optics for Utilities Level 3 course or at UTC events.
